The Objectives of Education
Education serves as a foundation for creating good citizens, not merely for generating wealth. It is essential for citizens to have freedom of mind and the ability to ask tough questions, analyze information for accuracy, logic, and comprehensiveness, reject poor reasoning, imagine alternative possibilities, and empathize with others. These critical thinking skills are vital for a functioning democracy and are typically nurtured through the humanities and arts, including literature, history, philosophy, and art. However, these areas have been significantly neglected (Martha Nussbaum, Outlook magazine, August 2007).
Education's objectives have been critically evaluated by various philosophers over time. These objectives include character building, holistic human development, preparation for adult life, development of citizenship, utilization of leisure, training for civic life, international living, social and national integration, scientific and technological advancement, universal education, equal educational opportunities, strengthening democratic political systems, and human resource development. Philosophy of education involves the criticism and systematic reflection upon these general theories and aims of education. It synthesizes educational facts with values to solve educational problems through philosophical methods and attitudes.
Scope of Philosophy of Education:
The scope of philosophy of education is confined to the field of education, focusing on interpreting human nature, the world, and their relationship with humans; the aims and ideals of education; the relationships between components of educational systems; the relationship between education and national life (socio-political, economic, and cultural progress); educational values determined by philosophical values; and the theory of knowledge and its relation to education.
Nature and Characteristics:
Philosophy of education is an area of applied philosophy, which uses philosophical methods and insights to address practical issues in education. It has practical relevance by addressing real-world educational issues to improve teaching practices, curricula, and policies. It adopts an interdisciplinary approach, integrating insights from ethics, epistemology, political philosophy, psychology, sociology, and educational theory. It involves critical examination of educational aims, values, and practices, and offers normative guidance on what education ought to be, suggesting ethical principles and educational goals.
Functions of Philosophy of Education:
- Determines the aims of education according to contemporary needs.
- Harmonizes new and old traditions in education.
- Provides educators and administrators with progressive visions for educational development.
- Prepares the younger generation to face modern challenges.
Philosophy of education is the key to a holistic formation of any person. It forms us to become global citizens who are analytical, critical and creative and who can genuinely contribute to the wellbeing of the society and world at large.

After much input and reflection on education, I realize that it is important to delve deeper into this theory. I have heard many people comment on an educated person, saying, "What is the use of studying if he behaves poorly?" It looks like in india the education system has failed the people. the education has given bread no doubt but it has not tought us to think free and ask questions.
